A RAF Eurofighter/Typhoon takes off in the early morning heat at RMAF
Base Butterworth. Mid Caption: This year marks the 40th Anniversary of
successful co-operation between the founding members of the Five Power
Defence Arrangement (FPDA); Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United
Kingdom and Australia. As part of Exercise Bersama Lima 11, F/A -18
Hornets from No. 75 Squadron (75 SQN) have deployed to practise air
combat tactics with participating nations, and will join air, ground and
naval forces of the FPDA training together in various locations on the
Malaysian Peninsula and in the South China Sea. Exercise Bersama Lima
promotes a shared understanding of procedures for air and maritime
operations, the protection of the marine environment and disaster relief
management, and is important training for Australian Air Force
personnel to hone key skills, work as a combined force and build
regional relationships with FPDA nations.

UK Defence Secretary Visits Typhoon Crews In South East Asia...
02 November 2011

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Four RAF Typhoon aircraft from Number 6 Squadron have flown from their base in Scotland to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) airbase in Butterworth, Malaysia to take part in Exercise BERSAMA LIMA 11 marking the 40th Anniversary of the Five Powers Defence Agreement (FPDA).

The 7000 mile trip from No 6 Squadron’s base at RAF Leuchars in Fife to the RMAF Base Butterworth took the pilots four days with stops in Jordan, Oman and Sri Lanka, supported throughout by engineers and ground crews as well as a VC-10 aircraft of 101 Squadron based at RAF Brize Norton.

Defence Secretary, Philip Hammond arrived in Singapore yesterday morning for the anniversary and met with his defence counterparts from Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Australia before laying a wreath at the Kranji Memorial Cross alongside Vice Admiral George Zambellas. Mr Hammond then flew to Malaysia where he visited RMAF Butterworth and emphasised the importance of the partnership for security in the region.

Mr. Hammond said:

“I am delighted that we were able to deploy Typhoon for the duration of this FPDA exercise. It underscores the UK’s continued commitment to the FPDA and to our defence engagement in South East Asia.

“Typhoon has proven itself on operations over Libya in both Air to Air and Ground attack roles and its versatility, endurance and reliability will provide a valuable contribution to the exercise.”

Established in 1971, the FPDA is a commitment undertaken by the five nations (UK, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Australia) to consult in the event of an attack on Singapore or Malaysia. It is the only multilateral defence agreement in South East Asia with an operational element. The joint exercise will see the participation of around 4000 troops, 68 aircraft, 18 ships, two submarines and various support elements from the FPDA member nations.

“The recent performance of Typhoon in its first multi-role contribution to operations has been outstanding and its deployment is especially meaningful given the FPDA’s fortieth anniversary.

“Following my discussions with the other FPDA members, we have agreed to improve co-operation against non-conventional threats, notably in the areas of maritime security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.

“The FPDA has an enduring value in ensuring security in the region and it is reassuring to see the same level of commitment from our partners. Singapore and Malaysia have been pivotal members of this pact and I am honoured to be in the region to mark this historic milestone.”

Participating in the FPDA exercise will provide Typhoon personnel with valuable expeditionary training in a tropical environment as well as operating in complex packages with multi-national participants.

Number 6 Squadron will continue to maintain its primary Quick Reaction Alert mission at RAF Leuchars during this deployment.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is participating in Exercise BERSAMA LIMA 2011, a major military exercise with Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom under the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA).

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the agreement, and Minister Smith will attend the 40th anniversary FPDA Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Singapore in November to mark the important milestone.

Commencing on 17 October, Exercise BERSAMA LIMA 2011 is being conducted in various locations on the Malaysian Peninsula and in the South China Sea.

Chief of Joint Operations Command, Lieutenant General Ash Power said the FPDA provides the ADF with the opportunity to develop relationships with important security partners while reinforcing Australia’s long-term commitment to regional peace and prosperity.

“The FPDA continues to be an integral part of the regional security architecture because of its ability to remain relevant to the needs of its members by adapting to the changing security environment,” Lieutenant General Power said.

“Since the FPDA's formation the scope of its activities has expanded from air defence to the development of joint capabilities, which has helped to develop greater interoperability among the armed forces of member nations.”

Australia’s contribution to the exercise includes Air Force multi-role F/A-18 Hornets, two Minehunters, and a Replenishment ship.

The Commander of the ADF forces, Brigadier Chris Hamilton, said BERSAMA LIMA aimed to enhance the way the combined air, ground and naval forces of the FPDA countries work together to conduct combined and joint warfare activities.

“BERSAMA LIMA also explores opportunities to incorporate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief capacity building,” Brigadier Hamilton said.

BERSAMA LIMA 2011 will conclude on 4 November.
