HADR Air Defence Radar (United States), Intelligence systems - Surveillance and reconnaissance

Description
Designed to meet new NATO Allied Command Europe (ACE) standard radar specifications, HADR will automatically detect, classify and report on all targets in its area of coverage. Operation is in the E/F-band (former S-band) of the spectrum and a 4.8 × 6 m planar-array antenna is used, generally protected within a radome. The HADR is a member of the same family as the VSTAR and there may be commonality of certain parts of equipment as well as operating principles. The HADR primary radar operates over a bandwidth greater than 12 per cent. The radar achieves a detection range of at least 320 km for a 1 m2 target. The instrumented range coverage is 500 km. Versatile computer control enables radar coverage to 30,000 m altitude and up to 24° elevation. False target reports are controlled to prevent ADGE system computer overloads.Target positional data is provided in three dimensions. Target range is measured to the nearest range cell while target azimuth and elevation are obtained by beam splitting. Performance in clutter is achieved by a digital mean velocity clutter tracker in conjunction with a single or double delay MTI canceller. A range-gated pulse-Doppler waveform and associated processing implementation is also provided. An antenna rotation period of 10 or 12 seconds is consistent with ADGE system data rate requirements. Primary or secondary radar target report rates can exceed 400 per scan at the radar output. However, transmission rates to the remote command and control site may be limited by datalink capacity. The HADR antenna

Status
There are now four HADR systems operational in Germany, two used in conjunction with the NATO Air Defence Ground Environment (NADGE) and known as GEADGE (German ADGE), where they replace AN/FPS-7 radar of the 412L radar network.A version of HADR, known as the HR-3000, has been selected for the update of NATO's air defence system on the southern flank. Raytheon has delivered two of these radars to Greece, two to Italy, three to Portugal and three to Turkey. Turkey, Italy and Greece will incorporate the equipments into the NADGE system. The HR-3000 incorporates a number of modifications to the basic HADR, including increased ECCM capability, wider receiver bandwidth, improved clutter rejection waveforms and a faster antenna rotation speed to meet the NATO requirement for a higher data rate.Raytheon has supplied three HADR radars for Norwegian air defence. These systems are used in shelters built into the top of mountains and are mounted on elevators so that the antennas can be retracted into environment-controlled silos for routine maintenance. The silos are designed and manufactured by Thune-Eureka of Norway. The first system is now operational. As part of the Malaysian Air Defence Ground Environment (MADGE) programme, one HADR is operational in Malaysia. Raytheon is prime contractor on this programme. Three more are operational in the People's Republic of China
